For example, chats on religion, your plan in life, philosophical ideas, moral issues, etc.

In my case, it used to happen a lot at university, and not much more since – I guess that's natural since you have more time with your friends then and there's less small talk to be made. But since I love these kinds of chats, I'm now consciously trying to "engineer" them in my daily (busy!) life where I catch up with friends much less frequently.

If you're also keen to spend less time on the same boring "how's work going" chitchat and more time on deeper topics, then there are 3 things I'm doing now to help spark deeper conversations that you might find helpful.

1. Recognise and avoid small talk

Unfortunately, the default mode is often small talk. This is like the lava floor you are trying to avoid. "How're you doing" is OK. "How's work / family / day-to-day going" is a sign to move on. Think of every minute as precious – and so every minute spent on extended small talk is a minute of your life you're never getting back and one you likely won't remember.

2. Ask provocative questions

As with most things you'll do in life, you can prepare for a deep conversation (you're already doing so by making it this far!). I find that it helps to have some provocative questions in mind that you can ask. These may be questions that are a bit personal, or questions that force someone to express an opinion on an issue that matters. For example:

What keeps you up at night? – personal question

Why do you believe in your religion? – personal question / force an opinion

Are people inherently good or evil? – force an opinion

What's the most controversial opinion you have? – force an opinion

...

You're not looking for a yes / no answer. The point is to spark conversation on a topic where you're not discussing your day-to-day but your opinions and feelings. What can you add to the list?

3. Invest time + create the right environment

The best conversations take time (and indeed you'll want them to if you're having fun!). If you're just doing a catch-up over a meal, you gotta work with what you have. But if you plan a weekend away with your friends, that sets a different tone entirely.

Conclusion

Deep conversations do come organically – doesn't mean you can't nudge the process along. I think if that's something you enjoy, it's totally worth being more intentional about it by steering the conversation in the right direction.

Do let me know if this is something you think about, or if you have any other ideas to add!

Accelerating tech adoption

It took telephones 50+ years to reach 50% penetration. We can see that technologies like the internet or cellphones took only a decade or so to get 50% penetration, while it took significantly longer previously (50+ years for telephones).

Building hype is much easier now than ever. The "mitigating factor" against apparent tech adoption is that you hear about new technologies much more easily and earlier in the development cycle, and are inevitably left hanging for years. Stable Diffusion / image AI is an exception, where we see a bleeding edge tech already deployed in consumer-facing apps because "adoption" is not much harder than packaging a script and presenting it on a web front-end for users. The majority of upcoming tech, such as Decentralised Finance or Autonomous Vehicles, is not so straightforward.

All that to say...

New tech is coming, and will inevitably affect our day-to-day. When it's ready for deployment it will scale rapidly (e.g. social media in mid-2000s), but it's important to bear in mind that in this day and age, we hear about tech even before that 0% point on the adoption graph.

Did you find this article interesting? I've always taken it to be an outcome of the other things you are doing. But on reflection, why not treat it like a skill?

Overview

When you want to learn piano, or volleyball, or poker, you would surely think of it like a sliding scale you can move up on. You typically start at zero with no skill, then you learn and practice, and work your way along a linear axis towards greater skill.

We can think about "building wealth" similarly – as a skill we can improve. The first step on this sliding scale is something like "exchanging your time for money", and the final step is something like "owning a marketplace / platform" (like the App Store) which gives you a regular income without having to actively create products.

Nathan frames this axis into 4 ladders of wealth creation, as a helpful way of grouping similar steps (e.g. "hourly wage" vs. "monthly salary" are both examples of exchanging time for money, but a salary is more reliable).

My 3 takeaways

Building wealth is a skill you can improve. As with every skill, you can pin-point specific things you need to do to get to the next stage (e.g. "learn musical scales" for learning piano, "learn to register a company" for setting up your own business)

You should invest your savings into yourself and in improving your wealth creation toolkit

There is a limit to the wealth you can build simply exchanging time for money. The key is to move to a better "ladder", e.g. selling services

Do have a read of Nathan's article and let me know what you think!

Consumption vs. Creation

Today I'm writing about an idea that first gripped me when I was 13: the balance (or contest) between consumption and creation.

We've all grown up in a world where consumption of content has been very easy. It's definitely gone a bit overboard with TikTok, Instagram, etc. promoting super short-form video, but to be honest consumption has always been quite easy in our lifetimes.

10 years ago, you could watch videos from all over the world on YouTube. 20 years ago, you could get anything on CD/DVD. 30-40 years ago, it was VHS. Before that, you did still have TV even if the content was limited!

In short – we grew up with a hunger for and abundance of (often unhealthy) content.

The balance

This question of consumption vs. creation is probably one that everyone has when they first start creating and publicly publishing some original work – and immediately feel a sense of reward for having put something out in the world of their own. How much time should I spend on creating?

If you're starting out from being fully on the consumption end, I think it is reasonable (and totally worth it) to set yourself a goal of 50-50%, i.e. spend the same amount of time creating as you do consuming.

What you create is of course up to you. Maybe it's your writing, videos, photography, music. In my case, oddly enough it started with some 3D artwork (which you are better off not looking up...).

So, should everyone be a "content creator"?

I do think content creation is a much better use of time than consumption. In most cases, it can be intellectually stimulating, and can encourage learning and support your growth.

However, since this article is not an advertisement for going down the so-called influencer route, I think it's important to "create" for the right reasons.

Are you working towards a goal?

Are you building a skill?

Are you bringing yourself into a community you like (e.g. writers, photographers, musicians)?

Should we be consuming at all?

While I'd say I'm a proponent of increasing the time spent on creating, I do wonder what the right amount of consumption is. I don't think it's zero. That said, I think there are a few ways to be mindful about what you consume.

When you next find yourself watching YouTube videos or TV shows or movies, do ask yourself:

Is this content inspiring to me?

Am I consuming to unwind or feel relaxed? (and if so, how much of it do I need?)

Am I consuming only to fill time? Could I instead do something more interesting?

Is this a question you have asked yourself in the past? I'm often guilty of taking way too long deliberating before coming to an answer – sometimes even for very simple decisions. How do CEOs make decisions?

There are lots of tricks in a CEO's toolkit for making decisions effectively and efficiently. I want to share a couple with you that I found useful!

1. Jeff Bezos's decision types

According to our friend Jeff, there are two types of decisions:

Type 1 decisions: Irreversible* (one-way doors)

Type 2 decisions: Reversible (two-way doors)

(*) Irreversible means that the barrier to reverse it is too high, even if the decision might technically be reversible.

If you're making an "irreversible" type 1 decision, like deciding which university to go to and committing for a full first year, you should really spend the time to consider it since it will have a lasting impact and it's hard to back out from.

If it's a "reversible" type 2 decision, like buying a shirt you can return, then there's no point wasting too much time over it. Do it quickly (and maybe even buy lots of shirts to return a few later) – you can always go back if you need to.

This method is targeted at organisations (particularly as they get large) so that they don't spend too long to make type 2 decisions, but there's no reason we can't apply it to our own lives!

2. How long to consider a decision

Another interesting rule (thought I can't remember the source for this one) is to spend more time considering decisions that will have a lasting impact.

If a decision will affect a week of your life, wait 24 hours before you make your mind.

If it will affect a year of your life, wait a month before you make your mind.

And so on...

The time you actually wait depends on your risk appetite, but the principle is to scale up your thinking time with the size of impact.

Do you have any tips and tricks for quick decision-making? On top of the usual product development and tweaking, I enjoyed sharing my progress along the way and even getting some engagement in return. A massive thank you to those of you who signed up for the updates on Twitter!! 😍

The product (Echomail) is now live for public use, even though it's obviously just an early version. You can read more about it here and here if you're interested.

📃 My takeaways from building in public

Building in public is almost a "hack" because it lets you build engagement, get early feedback, and lower your barrier to using social media productively – while essentially using content you were going to generate anyway. However, there's another hidden benefit: the connections you make.

At my work, if you were to ask anyone what the best part of the job is, almost invariably the answer would be "the people who work here," (in spite of the various other benefits of the job). Connecting with people who are interested in the same things as you is a great way to build your network, and sharing your work is one way to signal your interests.

If you have things you build / work on on the side, I'd highly recommend trying out this approach. It can be a great way to get feedback, encouragement (and even a sense of accountability!)

If you would like to follow future updates on projects I am working on, do check out my Twitter where I will post more regular updates.

Thanks for reading :)

My daily updates for Echomail: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Building in public - Project #1

Today's a special newsletter and I think you'll find it interesting if you want to show your work in public / online.

I'm going to spend the next week "building in public" a tool I could really use. I'll be posting daily updates on the website and my Twitter (but I won't email these updates so as to not spam your inboxes so follow my Twitter if you'd like to be a part of the journey!)

🧮 The problem

The problem I'm trying to solve is that people often have email addresses that are too long to communicate easily on the phone. In my case, it includes my full name and it's a nightmare to spell out every time.

Email shorteners / alias providers aren't great either. In most cases you can get a random email alias that’s no easier (try saying 1u90-qro3-wuy2@anonaddy.com on the phone!) or an unusual domain name that's unintuitive because it doesn't contain "mail" in the name.

📧 The project - an Email forwarding service

Over the next week, I’ll be building an email forwarding service that would let you:

Sign in with Google (since almost everyone has a Gmail)

Create your own email alias for free (e.g. shortword@shortdomain.com) that's easy to say

Receive emails on this alias. They would be forwarded to your Gmail, and you can reply back to them

The ideas is to have something you sign up to ONCE, then you don't have to revisit it (everything happens within your Gmail inbox).

✅ The game plan

In terms of my plan, I'm going to start by setting up a web server and connecting to the Mailgun API. I'm sure it's not the most efficient way to build this tool, but I just want a solution that works.

I've laid out my to-do list / backlog today and it looks something like this:

🚀 Follow for updates!

I'll be sharing daily updates on Twitter so follow there for updates and to tell me what you think along the way!
Follow @idrees_suhail

Would you take this bet?

If I offer you a $10 bet on a coin flip, would you take it?

According to decision theory, not many people are likely to take that bet because they'll feel the negative impact of losing $10 a lot more than they'll feel the positive impact

Suhail Idrees

If I offer you a $10 bet on a coin flip, would you take it?

According to decision theory, not many people are likely to take that bet because they'll feel the negative impact of losing $10 a lot more than they'll feel the positive impact of gaining $10.

This cognitive bias is called "loss aversion"... and I think it's just absurd.

Whether you know it or not, your life gets impacted by this bias almost every day. For example – Ever taken a free trial? One of the reasons you get offered one of those is that you will fear losing something you have so much that you'll buy the full product or service.

It's also interesting that this bias seems to get stronger as the stakes are increased. If 1 in 10 people might have taken the $10 bet above, then it would probably be 1 in 100 might take it if we increase it to $100 or $1000. Wonder how many it would be if the stakes were to take your Netflix privileges away. 😉

While the principle of not wanting to lose something is obvious, it really jumped out to me that even when the odds are 50:50, most people would not take the bet. It really shows that we are a species that's evolved to cling to certainty.

Another cool thing is that this area of psychology is still being explored, with research on the effect of higher/lower stakes coming as recently as 2017.

Take a minute to reflect on your decisions in the last month. Is this something that's affected you?

How to get a discount

Spoiler alert: This article is about building confidence and grit – the discount is a bonus! ;)

Here's a fun challenge for you to try out next week: Every time you go for a coffee (or sandwich, or lunch) this week, ask for 10% off.

Whether or not you

Suhail Idrees

Spoiler alert: This article is about building confidence and grit – the discount is a bonus! ;)

Here's a fun challenge for you to try out next week: Every time you go for a coffee (or sandwich, or lunch) this week, ask for 10% off.

Whether or not you get it doesn't matter (though I'll tell you how often it works). This "comfort challenge" is all about building your confidence and overcoming your fear of rejection, by forcing yourself into a slightly uncomfortable situation.

There's actually very little downside to it. Worst case, you'll get told no. So what? It's like being told a coffee isn't available, it's not a big deal. You just move on with your life. The upside is pretty good, though. If you do it for a week, it will really help build your confidence and you will learn how to act in uncomfortable situations.

The way I see it – you will definitely have uncomfortably situations in the future. Maybe someone calls you out on something in a work meeting, or you get caught up in a fight, or you get told that your flight is fully booked and you need to wait for another one. Why not practice for those situations now?

In a way, it's a bit like practicing for an exam or an interview. One rule though: Since it's not about getting the discount, you can't say it's an experiment. You must own up to the request when you make it.

If you get in the habit of doing so, you'll naturally learn how to carry yourself more confidently – and I think that's a skill worth learning in just a week!

By the way, I heard about this challenge from Tim Ferriss (author of the 4 hour work week). Do check out his stuff if you found it interesting.

As promised, I'll tell you about my experience when I tried it out last week: I got a discount ~50% of the time. I'd say that's pretty good!

Do try it out this week, and reply back / email me to let me know how it went. I've always found it interesting to follow when people share their work-in-progress publicly. I think this one takes the crown.

Josh Pigford is a serial entrepreneur who shares on his website the 62 (!) projects that he has worked on in the last 20 years.

I think this list is absolutely fascinating. Looking through it, most projects were "failures" in that they were shut down. There's a minority that he sold for anywhere between $200 and $4,000,000 (!). And then there are a few that are still active.

My takeaways:

It doesn't take all that much to start something new. A lot of the projects are Amazon affiliate sites. Some are just 1 page website that let you do something simple, e.g. a phrase guesser. The big ones are definitely more sophisticated (e.g. the $4M project was a business insights app), but it really drives home that the barrier to entry of starting a side project that could potentially blow up is actually quite low.

Follow the trends. As you look through the projects, they're highly reminiscent of what was going on at the time. For example a web template building service in 2006, Photoshop tutorials in 2007, smart Spotify playlists in 2019, visual NFT voting in 2021. Often the first to serve an unmet need gains a huge advantage in the market, and following / predicting trends can be really useful.

Sometimes, there are too many variables to recognise the "right" idea, so try a bunch of things. Planning ahead of work is important – and picking the right product and market cannot be overrated – but I think it's also important to recognise situations where you're unlikely to accurately predict the outcome. There will always be unpredictability, especially when you're on the bleeding edge (think crypto, NFTs and the metaverse). In this case, it might just be wiser to try a bunch of things and see what sticks! Some people refer to this approach as Ready, Fire, Aim.

How do you go about deciding which projects to work on? While it's always fun to find out which Powerpuff Girl you are, the personality quiz I'm talking about is called MBTI.

I'm not big on psychological tests, but having used MBTI for 5 years now, I can give you 2 good reasons to take it.

What is MBTI?

It's a personality test that tells you where you stand on 4 dimensions. Based on your standing, you get a letter for each dimension, so you end up with a 4 letter personality type (such as "ESTJ").

As an example, the first letter can be E (Extraversion) or I (Introversion), which tells you whether you prefer to focus on the external world or your own inner world. I won't cover the rest now but you can read about them here.

Why take it?

Here are your promised 2 reasons to take the MBTI quiz:

It will tell you your "default" behaviour, so that you can be more intentional about your daily life.

For example, if MBTI tells me that I am introverted, it means that by default I might not put enough energy as I'd like into social situations. I can then decide if I'm OK with that, or if I'd like to have a huge social circle, in which case I will need to actively invest in doing so.

(I've used extraversion/introversion as an easy-to-understand example, but I'd recommend reading more on MBTI to learn about the other dimensions).

It will give you a common language when working with others who have taken the test.

Relaying your personality traits to someone can usually be very difficult and often frustrating. MBTI can be a helpful tool for communicating your personality type to others, so they can know what to expect. In a way, it helps translate what people might have called "idiosyncrasies" into personality traits that you need to be aware of.

For example, instead of saying "I prefer to make lists for every single thing I do", you can say "I'm a J."

Have you taken MBTI or a similar test? But then it’s a week later and you’re wondering why you haven't gotten to it yet – and you realise you just didn’t have the time. It wasn’t your fault. You didn’t really procrastinate. You just have a very busy schedule between workm, and a social life, and a personal life – there simply just wasn’t enough time to get to this productive thing.

Time for an uncomfortable truth.

In 99% of cases, you absolutely did have the time. It's a bit absurd to say you didn't have any time in the 168 hours we all get every week. Elon Musk is off building rockets with the same number of hours. You did have time, you just didn’t use it.

So how do you get around this problem?

One life hack is to schedule time in your diary to do productive things, or even the admin things you would otherwise put off.

Yes, yes – I sound like a maniac for scheduling "work" on a weekend. But it's not stupid if it works, right?

If you have any task on your radar that you think you might put off, a great way to make sure it gets done is to put in the block in your diary ahead of time to dedicate towards it. It probably doesn’t sound like it would make a difference – but for me it completely changes my mindset about it.

Now I know the task is coming and I know when it’s coming. which means I no longer have to worry about it ahead of time, or worry about procrastinating. When it gets to time, I just think: I have a protected hour now solely to do this one thing, let me get through it so I don't have to worry about it again. And that is a much greater level of motivation then I would’ve had otherwise.

Do try it out and let me know if it works! We've all been there. Maybe you decided to get into shape, or into writing or yoga or cooking. Why didn't you stick with it?

Forming new habits is one of the hardest things you can do, and there are many philosophies you'll find on the topic. There's unlikely to be a silver bullet here – but here's one by James Clear that I found very interesting, and that I think can be quite a powerful tool for helping you chart your life.

First: The "default" way

When I think about making a positive change in my routine, my default is to set an achievable target –

"In one month, I'll exercise 3 times a week"

"I'll read the Economist for 10 minutes every evening"

Sensible, right? It gives me something measurable, and makes it easy to track progress.

The problem is that it's just a target. There's not much at stake. So what if I fail? I can always set a new goal in a few months' time when the motivation stirs up.

Enter: Identity-based planning

The above is what we call "outcome-based habit forming". The outcome is your guiding light – it's your be-all and end-all.

Instead, potentially a better approach is to use "identity-based habit forming". To do so, you think about the person you want to become and then guide yourself with nudges in that direction.

For example:

I want to lose 10 kgs 🡒 I will become the person who uses muscle over machine 🡒 To prove this to myself, I will always take the stairs

I want to make YouTube videos 🡒 I will become the person who posts on YouTube every week 🡒 To prove this to myself, I will spend 15 minutes on my YouTube every day, whether it's scripting, recording, editing

I want to get a better job 🡒 I will become the person who has a large, active professional network 🡒 To prove this to myself, I will reach out to one person on LinkedIn everyday

Why is this a better approach?

James describes habit-forming with 3 levels.

Changing Outcomes: This has to do with achieving specific targets, and is typically the default.

Changing Processes: This has to do with changing your workflow, which will then lead to better outcomes.

Changing Identity: This has to do with changing your world-view, which will lead to better processes, which will lead to better outcomes.

If you go with (3) instead of (1), you are making a deeper change within your self – and the theory goes that this change is more likely to take hold (and subsequently more difficult to erode).

How do you go about forming positive habits? All you really need is a way to beat inflation or, at the very least, a way to beat the 0% return you are getting from your bank account.

Where should I invest?

I'm not a position to give you an investing strategy, but an easy place to start is by investing in "index funds".

Index funds make your life simple by letting you buy a bit of everything. This is typically a good long-term medium-risk, medium-return strategy because you are effectively investing in the whole stock market, and the stock market as a whole will typically go up in the long-term.

When you buy 1 share of an index fund such as the "S&P 500", your investment is split across lots of different companies. This means a change in a single company's value won't affect you too strongly. In other words, you are spreading your risk.

How much will I earn?

As an example, if you invested £100 in the "S&P 500" 10 years ago, it would now be worth ~£400 (source) at a return of ~14% every year.

In the same time period, goods costing £100 would now cost ~£125 (source 1, source 2).

That means you would have beaten inflation by an order of magnitude.

Can I lose money?

Yes. There is always a risk in investing, and an index fund can also go down. However, investing in an index fund is a great way of spreading the risk, because it's effectively tracking the whole market which in general trends upwards.

You can see below in the tracker for S&P 500 that there are 3 noticeable dips: the dot-com bubble (2000), the great recession (2008) and the COVID recession (2020). In each case, the market recovers in a few years.

OK, so how do I actually invest?

❕

Before you invest, make sure you've taken care of any outstanding high-interest debt, such as loans or credit cards. For example, you can invest in specific public companies, purchase crypto-currency, or even get into real estate.

Where are you on your investing journey?
